I am currently on the hunt for some lovely songbirds or finches to keep in the shop. My friend Kathi at KD Vintage had some in her showroom in Atlanta and I fell completely in love with the ambiance they created. I am quickly learning lots! Zebra finches seem to be the most prevalent and least expensive...but there is a reason, they are prolific little buggers. I have no desire to get into the bird business so on to another breed. I am also running across all kinds of cage possibilities.
Here is a wonderful post from Martha with some lovely cages and the history of bird keeping.
Don't get to suckered in by those cute little birds and all their ambiance. Like you, I came across these little creatures in an antique store and just had to have some (along with an antique birdcage that cost me $400, thats another story). Everyday. I had to throw away eggs and I felt so bad that I had to give them away because I just couldn't stand it any longer. And they are very messy. I still have the bird cage minus the birds, thank God! ReplyDeleteGood Luck with the bird hunt. I remember my Mother wanting beautiful finch birds and my Father bought her 2. When I came home one day from college break she had about 45 in the cage!!!!
ReplyDeletePeacock Park had live birds in her showroom too. So relaxing to listen too.
my grandma always had canaries & i loved to listen to them.
ReplyDeletea very funny bird story - there is an antique mall in Florence, South Carolina called the "Thieves Market". when i got to the store, i really, really needed to use the restroom. i went inside & found the restroom close to the cash register. the entire time i was in there, i kept hearing this woman just cackling like crazy. i thought "what a crazy laugh she has! poor dear". i came out and was sooooo surprised (pleasantly surprised) to discover it wasn't a woman but a great big bird! they had them all over the store. some in cages & some not. and they told me they had even more at home! i think those big ones live a long time, too.
and, by the way, the store was aptly named. the prices were highway robbery.
Beautiful pic...and I like your idea of having birds inside.Zebra Finks are so cute.
ReplyDeleteSpring can't come quick enough for me! I hate winter! I want to live some place tropical! Have a great week!

OOOoooh.....aaaaahhh....can you hear me from over the hill at Logan? Your store looks beautiful! I stopped by with my "oh so picky, soon to be wedded daughter" last month and she was crazy over your store too! Wait until she sees it now. We'll be back soon to check out the new stuff! I see lots that will match her wedding venue. In my book, nothing is better than romantic....
